CZECH IMPORTANT DAYS:

22nd April

Den Země (Earth Day) is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Many environment friendly events take place around Czech Republic on the day, including woods cleaning, eco fairs and nature walks. http://www.earthday.org/earth-day/

23rd April

23rd April is the Světový den knihy a autorských práv (World Book and Copyright Day) and a symbolic date for world literature. It is on this date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. Many Czech bookstores have special offers during the week and libraries organise public author readings. http://www.knihatislusi.cz/index.php

30th April

30th April is pálení čarodějnic ("burning of the witches") or čarodějnice ("the witches") in the Czech Republic. Huge bonfires - as tall as 8 metres - are built and burnt in the evening, preferably on top of hills. Young people gather around. Sudden black and dense smoke formations are cheered as "a witch flying away". As evening advances to midnight and fire is on the wane, it is time to go to search for a cherry tree in blossom. Young women should be kissed past midnight (and during the following day) under a cherry tree. They "will not dry up" for a year long. First May is then celebrated as "the day of those in love".
