While a number of Junior High staff and students travelled abroad there were also some who remained at Riverside and participated in the Subject Extension and Expo programme. The week included trips to IQLandia Science Centre in Liberec, Lidice Town Memorial and JumpPark trampoline centre in Prague. There was a real buzz amongst the students as they enjoyed investigating many different scientific principles through the hands on displays at IQLandia.
The next day students were just as inquisitive but much more reverent and respectful as they had a guided tour of Lidice Town memorial and the Museum. Several students asked great questions and they were all touched by the significance of the site and associated events. On our return to school the PTA greeted us with Pizza slices and ice creams – thank you very much!
On the Thursday students bounced and flipped their way around the newly opened JumpPark. This is a great venue, well worth the visit, and the students spent an hour burning up a lot of energy, making for a well earned lunch on the way back to school.
As well as these fun trips the students also eagerly participated in group projects during their time at school. The projects included learning about forensic science and completing a Crime Scene Investigation. The crime had everyone intrigued throughout the week. There was also a group learning about Sustainable materials and processes, a group transforming furniture into art pieces crammed full of Czech Culture and a group of year 9 boys used the Lidice visit and visits to other historic sites to document the story surrounding the history of the town.
All of this allowed the students to extend their learning and to present what their knowledge and work to their fellow students. It was a very enjoyable and educational week – well done students and thank you to all the teachers.
