Welcome to Junior High

Our Strategic Values

+

Challenge

Challenge is at the heart of everything we do. Through challenge, we aim to inspire students to take risks, to explore their limits, and to ultimately reach their potential in all areas of school life. In the Junior High, students are academically challenged through a rigorous curriculum taught by specialist teachers with a vast range of support and extension opportunities designed to promote individual achievement.

+

Community

Our school community is the secret of our success. Students at Riverside are not just recipients but are active participants in a vibrant school community alongside their teachers and families. Riverside actively builds community both within and beyond the classroom. This allows students to feel connected and to be challenged within a safe space where creativity, exploration, competition, and innovation can thrive.

+

Care

Each and every child at Riverside is seen and cared for. They are recognised as individuals with unique talents and capabilities worth celebrating. This care is incredibly important through the years of Junior High where students face a challenging and exciting time of change, development, and growth. Through care, our students develop maturity, empathy, and resilience.

Let’s explore our Junior High School!

A Word from the Principal of the Junior High

My name is Sarita Myers and I would like to welcome you to our Junior High School. When you step through the doors, you will find a very special place filled with energy and enthusiasm for learning. The Junior High years represent an incredibly exciting time of opportunity. There is a spark during these years which, when carefully nurtured, can grow into an incredible flame as students explore what it means to be scientists, innovators, artists, critical thinkers, problem solvers, and so much more.

Curriculum and Learning

At Riverside, we recognise and value that every child is unique. Our broad and balanced curriculum is designed to challenge, inspire, and motivate students to build the necessary skills to achieve their individual potential as they prepare to enter Senior High. The Junior High curriculum structure is based on the British National Curriculum (Key Stage 3 Programme, Years 7 – 9) to meet the needs of an international student body. Individual subjects draw upon comparative resources across the world. It is important for students to begin thinking about their educational goals at this stage and planning what they might like to study in the future.

The Junior High Curriculum:

  • Provides high quality education in the English language through broad and balanced course offerings.
  • Sets high standards that ensure all students are challenged while nurturing individual gifts and talents and acknowledging diverse learning styles.
  • Builds on prior knowledge and experience while fostering independence and preparing students well for success in Senior High School.
  • Inspires excellence by providing opportunities for creativity, exploration, innovation, and self-reflection.

The programme is based on the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education (Rámcový vzdělávací program pro základní vzdělávání RVP ZV) and primarily focuses on the educational area (Czech) Language and Literature. The aim of the programme is to develop the skills and competencies required to succeed in official testing within the Czech system. Junior High Czech for Czech lessons take place during 2 morning sessions (7:30-8:10) per week of 40 minutes each. Official testing takes place four times a year.

A key focus during the Junior High years is the development of critical skills necessary for success in further education. Our dedicated team of educators builds on the learning and skills acquired in Primary School and engages students in developing their critical thinking, problem solving, study skills, independence, innovation and self-reflection.

Students in the Junior High benefit from specialist instruction delivered by highly qualified and experienced teachers and staff who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the classroom. The curriculum comes to life when students are able to conduct experiments, engage in real-world language learning practice, create music and art, design, innovate, perform and compete.

Student Voice

At Riverside Junior High we want all students to recognise and have confidence that their voice matters. This culture is built by listening to students, respecting and trusting them, and allowing them to drive challenge and change.

The Student Council in the Junior High is led by the three elected officials as leaders for the year who represent the voices of their peers. The rest of the Student Council is composed of nominated and elected representatives from each tutor group. The Student Council leads assemblies, plans events, collects and shares the ideas of the student body, and promotes meaningful change.

The Eco Council is a student-initiated organisation that considers ways to promote sustainability in our school and local community. Eco Council members think about how the students and school actions affect the environment and undertake projects that will help inform the students about local and global issues and promote choices that will make the world a better place.

Each Riverside student participates as a member of one of four houses, Komensky, Havel, Karel, or Hus. Houses are led by House Captains who organise competitions, prepare assemblies, and promote school spirit and community.

Students in Riverside Junior High are active in service to their local and global communities through a wide range of student, staff and parent initiated opportunities. Students learn to be advocates for local and global change that starts with the individual through curricular and extra-curricular programmes.

Skills for Life

At Riverside, we believe in nurturing the whole child by providing more than a high quality education, extending the educational experience to develop skills and passions that students will carry with them for a lifetime. This is achieved through a vast range of opportunities provided in our Skills for Life extracurricular programme.

The Skills for Life clubs provide Riverside students with opportunities to explore new interests, build physical and social skills, deepen understanding of a range of fields of study, gain experience, and support personal growth and development.

School Day

During the school day, Riverside Junior High students make use of our well-resourced classroom and specialised facilities by participating in eight lessons, each lesson scheduled for 40 minutes. Some lessons are scheduled as double lessons, lasting for 80 minutes. PE and extracurricular Sporting clubs take place at our purpose-built facilities on our Sedlec campus.

The Junior High School is located in the heart of the thriving neighborhood of Hradcanska, adjacent to a major public transport hub for the area. This enables easy and convenient access to school. Students come to the Junior High from all over the city, and it is within twenty minutes of most family homes.

Riverside provides an easy and reliable shuttle bus option to transport students to/from our Primary School (Sedlec) campus before and after school daily. Many students, especially those with siblings in the Primary School, find this service highly convenient.
